Montage #2; Homage Louise Nevelson; NOW AVAILABLE at Frog Hollow Gallery, Church Street, Burlington, VT.
In the world of art, it is commonplace for artists to "borrow" bits and pieces from other artists work. My current work, my "Homage," series, is all about this practice. Each sculpture in this series is honoring a sculptor who’s work I admire.
This is second wall hanging sculpture in the series. It is a salute to the remarkable American sculptor, Louise Nevelson. Nevelson worked primarily with “found” wood turnings (table legs and the like). She fit them tightly together within square or rectangular frames. Often, the entire sculpture was painted black.
In my homage to her, I have selected various pieces of scrap wood (NOT turnings) that I have collected over the years. They are painted black and set on a white background with a black frame. The piece in the very center is The Church that is at the top of Church Street in Burlington, VT (hence the title.) It is 24 in high, 24 in wide and 1.25 in deep.
This wall hanging sculpture is currently on exhibit at Frog Hollow Gallery, Church Street, Burlington, VT. It may be purchased there, or here on this website.
Other sculptures in this group (completed works, works in progress, and works imagined), salute (or will salute) sculptors Barnett Newman, Constantin Brâncuși, George Rickey, Richard Stankiewicz (my mentor in graduate school), and Clement Meadmore.
