Cylindrical Geoform in Decline; Study
This small sculpture was the earliest pieces in series of sculptures that became known as my "Perfection is Elusive” series. It heralded two advances in my thinking about the sculptures I was making in the early 1970’s. All of the pieces in the series began with a pure geometric form, and included an “interruption” in that form. This piece was the first were the “interruption” (made of lead) was made of a DIFFERENT metal than the form (made of steel), giving a natural color contrast between the pure form and the interruption. Also, this piece was the first where I hammered the metal inside the interruption … yielding texture in this piece. In future pieces hammering became a method of shaping the metal in the interruption as well as texturing it.
This sculpture, a pure geometric form, "interrupted” by a huge gash, is a tangible representation of these thoughts … the near perfections of earth and of humankind, in the face of the powerful enemies of perfection.
This piece is 7in high x 3.5in in diameter.
